In The Spotlight

The library is a one-room historic building that first opened its doors over 100 years ago. Inside, it is almost like entering a life-size dollhouse, and preschoolers are surrounded by things just their size. The circulation desk is low, and the librarians are seated so they don’t tower over your preschooler. Posters and a mirror line the bottom of the desk at eye level for young children. Here’s more of what you’ll find.

Books

Of course, books are the big story here. The walls are lined with bookshelves, organized so adults can help their children find the best picks for them. If you are teaching your preschooler letters and numbers, alphabet books and counting books each have their own section, right next to each other. There are multiple copies of favorites like Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar, so you’re likely to find your preschooler’s favorites along with something new you may not have heard about yet.

Toys

The library also has toys. There’s a dollhouse, a train set and large stuffed animals and animal shaped pillows to cuddle on or next to while reading. The furniture is the perfect size for preschoolers, and there are tables and chairs where they can do puzzles or open up big picture books.

For Grownups

For parents, grandparents, and other caregivers, the library is a great resource. As you walk in, the entranceway is full of flyers, brochures and newspapers of local interest. There is a small collection of adult books in the library, all with parenting and teaching topics. Expecting preschool visitors? Check out one of the grandparent kits, backpacks filled with books, toys, and other selections around a theme.

Storytime and Programs

The library holds several different storytimes and special events throughout the month. No registration is required for storytimes, but the Twos and Threes program requires advance registration, as do some other programs. Check the events calendar for details.

Considerations

Parking at the library is very limited. The building sits on a triangular island at an intersection of streets. On the street parking is the only option, and be sure to read signs carefully as some sections of the street are reserved for permit holders. The library is close to several bus stops, but is not near any Metro rail stops. The library tends to be very crowded on Saturday, so try to go on Tuesday or Thursday if you can.
